Patients, paying special attention to oral hygiene, using tooth brushes, floss, interdental brushes and rinsers correctly, are usually surprised when doctor tells them they have caries. No matter how carefully you brush your teeth – there are places which you cannot reach.
A tooth is not flat, it has complicated relief, made of tubera and fissures – hollows between the tubera. Caries usually starts in the fissures: these chinks may be rather deep, while their width is less than a millimeter. Food remains and bacteria cannot be removed form the fissures even with the help of the most advanced hygiene means.
Does it mean that caries is inevitable? Alack, this is a malicious joke of nature – such tooth structure makes it hard to avoid caries.
But there is a way out, simple and ingenious. Fissure is refuge for bacteria – our aim is not to let them in. The chinks must be filled with the material, which prevents bacteria from getting into the fissure and educes fluorine, strengthening tooth.
This technology is called “Fissure Sealing”.
These are the stages of the procedure:
Doctor cleans teeth with professional brushes and pastes, fissures are covered with anti-bacterial gel and then filled in with sealer– fluid material. The method does require dental drilling machine, that is why the procedure is comfortable even for small patients.
Fissure sealing can be performed at any age, but the earlier the patient has it the better, because the material strengthens teeth providing them with fluoride.
Calf’s teeth sealing helps to keep them till permanent ones appear which is very important – early loss of calf’s teeth leads to inadequate eruption of permanent ones and results in wrong bite.
Permanent teeth give us the second chance to have beautiful smile. Fissure sealing performed right after the teething reduces the risk of caries development by 85-90%. However it is never too late to have this procedure.
