Number of children with speech problems is growing nowadays. But unfortunately, they come to a speech therapist only before school, after 5 years of age, when the so called sensitive period is over. That is why problems with both oral and written speech appear when a child is being taught to read and write. To avoid such problems it is necessary to pay special attention to the development of your child since his early childhood.
Speech problems have negative impact on the mentality of the child. They complicate communication, cognitive processes, affect emotional sphere. A number of secondary defects appear under the influence of speech problem, making the development of a child anomalous. Speech of children of pre-school age is very vulnerable and is often exposed to negative influence. The most critical periods are 1-2 years, 3 years, 6-7 years.
Special attention should be paid to the causes of speech pathology:
• Various pre-natal pathologies, which lead to inadequate development of fetus. The strongest defects appear as a result of inadequate development of fetus since 4th week till 4th month. Speech pathology may also be caused by toxicosis during the pregnancy, virus and endocrine diseases, traumas, Rhesus factor incompatibility, etc.
• Childbirth trauma and delivery asphyxia, which lead to intracranial extravasations.
• Various diseases in early childhood (the mostly harmful are frequent infectious and virus diseases, meningo – encephalitis and early gastroenterological disorders)
• Skull traumas, accompanied by concussion of the brain
• Hereditary factors
• Unfavorable life conditions, leading to micro-social pedagogical abandonment, emotional sphere damage and inadequate speech development.
